February is Heart Health Month and a great time to focus on preventing this widespread killer knows as heart disease. According to the Center for Disease Control, approximately 1 in 4 deaths each year are due to some form of heart diseases. With a few steps in the right direction, you can easily do your part to keep your heart healthy.
The American Heart Association breaks heart health down into four simple parts: Eat Smart, Add Color, Move More, and Be Well. They suggest that a combination of these four pillars of health can leave you healthy for good!
Eating smart starts at home. Better eating habits are built at home for both you and your family. Practice healthy cooking methods with the right kind of food as you eat balanced meals as a family.
Just as mentioned in my last blog post, it is important to eat a variety of colors when it comes to vegetables. The same goes for fruits. Each color contains different nutrients and antioxidants. Skipping a color may mean you are skipping out on those nutrients. Fresh, canned, or frozen are all great choices when it comes to fruits and veggies.
We all know that exercise is key when it comes to health, especially heart health. If you are wondering where to start, 150 minutes a week is the suggested amount of physical activity. More important than keeping track of the minutes you move, just move more!
Finding balance is a great way to focus on being well. Reducing stress, keeping weight off, making time for self-care, relaxation, and sleep are all suggestions made by the American Heart Association as tactics to be well.
