Where’s The Health? // Garlic Vegetable Sauté

It is no surprise to read that fruits and vegetables are good for you, but have you ever wondered which fruits and veggies you should eat for optimal nutrition? Rather than focusing on specific fruits and vegetables, focus on eating a variety of colors. The color of a fruit or vegetable can indicate of the nutrients it holds.

The American Heart Association separates fruits and veggies into five color groups: red & pink, blue & purple, yellow & orange, white & brown, and green. To maximize nutrition, eat a variety of colors everyday.

These tips can help you eat a variety of colors everyday:

  1. Add a little color to every meal and snack.
  2. When you are asked to bring a dish to a party or potluck, bring something full of fruits and veggies.
  3. Watch grocery store ads for ways to save.
  4. Canned, frozen, and dried fruits and veggies are just as nutritious as fresh. Opt for those without added salt or sugar.
  5. Be on the lookout for new produce when seasons change. Eating fruits and vegetables in season can keep things interesting and help save you money.

As mentioned in tip number 5 above, it may be helpful to familiarize yourself with fruits and vegetables in season. Eating a variety of colors and eating in season will boost nutrition and save you money. Bell peppers and onions are in season year round. You can combine them with many different, colorful vegetables. Today I combined them with zucchini and jalapeños to make a vegetable sauté. A vegetable sauté is the perfect way to add color to your plate. Enjoy!
